About Paul

An elderly man with white hair and glasses sitting at a table with an open book in front of him, in a warmly lit room with bookshelves and a window with sunlight in the background.

I’m Paul Jones—a pastor, pianist, and writer.

I have spent much of my life helping people encounter Jesus through Scripture, worship, music, and the ordinary rhythms of faith.

Over the years, I have become increasingly convinced of a simple truth:

God is near.

Much of the spiritual life is simply learning to become more attentive to His presence.

Near grew from that conviction—a desire to help people slow down, listen, and recognize the presence of Jesus in the places where life is actually lived.

a life shaped by scripture

Some of my earliest memories of faith are connected to Scripture, familiar hymns, and the simple songs that helped teach me who Jesus is.

Over the years, those early foundations became part of a much deeper journey through pastoral ministry, worship, prayer, teaching, music, and the ordinary joys and challenges of life.

As a pastor, I have had the privilege of walking with people through seasons of celebration, loss, waiting, transition, uncertainty, and hope.

As a pianist, I have discovered again and again that music can create space for truth to move from the mind into the heart.

And through it all, Scripture has remained the steady place where I return to listen, remember, and re-center my life in the presence of God.

I have come to believe that spiritual formation often happens quietly—not only in dramatic encounters, but in the daily rhythms of listening, worshiping, trusting, and taking the next faithful step.

why near exists

Near grew out of a conviction that has become increasingly important to me:

God is not distant. He is present.

Yet in the noise, hurry, and responsibilities of everyday life, it is easy to lose our awareness of Him.

Near exists to help create space for a different kind of attentiveness—to slow down, listen, return to Scripture, make room for prayer, and become more aware of the presence of Jesus in ordinary life.

Through reflections, piano meditations, and simple practices, my hope is that Near will help people move beyond simply knowing truths about God and begin living with a deeper awareness of His nearness.

Not striving to find Him.

Not waiting for a dramatic moment.

But learning to recognize that He has been near all along.

a personal hope

One of my deepest hopes is to pass along what has sustained and strengthened my own walk with Christ.

The Scriptures that have anchored me.

The hymns and songs that have carried truth into my heart.

The quiet lessons learned through ministry, prayer, waiting, worship, and ordinary faithfulness.

I want Near to encourage people not simply to admire a spiritual idea, but to discover a way of living—more awake to God’s presence, more responsive to His voice, and more rooted in the peace and joy of walking with Jesus.

And I especially hope these truths will continue beyond my own generation, helping others discover that a life with God is not confined to a church service or a devotional moment.

It is a life lived with Him—day by day, moment by moment.
